常绿乔木,高达30米,胸径40厘米;小枝无毛或幼嫩时在节上被锈色或黄褐毛柔毛。叶革质,倒披针形,长圆形或长圆状椭圆形,长10-26厘米,宽4-10厘米,先端渐尖或尾状渐尖,自2/3以下渐窄至基部,上面无毛,下面中脉具红褐色柔毛或散生平伏微毛;侧脉每边12-24条;叶柄长1.8-3.5厘米;托叶痕长0.5-1.2厘米。花芳香,花梗粗壮,直径8-10毫米,离花被片下约1厘米处具1苞片脱落环痕,花被片9-12,外轮3片褐色,腹面染红色或紫红色,倒卵状长圆形长约7厘米,向外反曲,中内轮6-9片,直立,乳白色染粉红色,倒卵状匙形,长5-7厘米,1/4以下渐狭成爪;雄蕊长10-18毫米,两药室稍分离,药隔伸出成三角尖,花丝与药隔伸出部分近等长;雌蕊群圆柱形,长5-6厘米,心皮无声,露出背面具浅沟。聚合果鲜时紫红色,卵状长圆形,长7-12厘米;蓇葖背缝全裂,具乳头状突起。花期5-6月,果期8-9月。【引自:中国植物志】
